Organization Type

Work in Culture (WIC) is a non-profit arts service organization that has been serving the cultural Ontario cultural sector since 1998. WIC advances the careers of artists, creatives, and cultural workers from diverse lived experiences, and supports the organizations that engage them through entrepreneurial and business skills development and innovative research.

Working in close partnership with the Arts Management programs at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), Work in Culture will provide curricular, innovative WIL experiences to 350 undergraduate arts management students designed to help them navigate the range of career options and workplaces available to them and include them in critical discussions with industry professionals around arts & culture career development.

Through two in-person events and a series of panels, students will connect directly with industry professionals to clarify and define career paths. Participants will complete reflections, research, and submit industry project assignments linked to these sessions. Students will have the opportunity to present their final presentations/industry projects to a panel of industry experts for feedback.

The arts & culture sector has many small- and medium-sized organizations that face challenges to participating in traditional WIL. By integrating these WIL experiences into the curriculum, Work in Culture and UTSC will increase the number of small- and medium-sized organizations involved in WIL experiences by offering a manageable level of commitment. Students will benefit from a more comprehensive introduction to the arts & culture career landscape and timely industry connections to help inform them on what career paths are available and what skills are required.
